Each Monday and Wednesday afternoon our students benefit from a visit from Kate Hilbert, a licensed occupational therapist.
In the mornings Kate attends Edmonds Community College to complete a degree in Special Education. She then plans to earn a master’s degree in teaching the visually impaired from Portland State University.
In the afternoons Kate volunteers her time with our students. Her focus is on helping the children learn adaptation skills, giving them confidence to become independent, and encouraging them to explore and learn new things.
One of her many tools is big, bouncy balls. She spends some of her time helping the students exercise on these balls and teaching them to balance and navigate through space with more confidence.
Kate finds her personal experience with a white cane to be valuable when working with the children. In January she will travel to Oregon to get a guide dog.
