Never think volunteers work for “nothing.” Their time and efforts are not merely obtained without price, but are priceless. They give so that the children of the Louis Braille School may receive attention, instruction, and the opportunity to learn what is necessary to live a purposeful life. Everyone involved in such work, whether as a paid staff member or a volunteer, shares in the achievements of the children. Each of us contributes to the big job. None of us can do it alone.
Our volunteer needs are varied.
Data Entry
If you’re handy with a computer, there is an ongoing need for data entry. The work atmosphere is relaxed and the children are never far. Our offices are mostly open spaces, not isolated cubicles. Please contact us
if you wish to help in this way.
Food Label and Box-Top Programs
Certain companies help schools obtain equipment and supplies through the collection food labels and box-tops. These programs sound like simple projects (and they are), but they can be organized and promoted in countless ways, engaging people of all ages. If you like that kind of challenge, don’t wait any longer to let us know.
Grounds Maintenance
The Louis Braille School is fronted by a parking lot and half-circled by a belt of greenery. Sweeping the lot on a regular basis is a way to volunteer in the fresh air and keep us looking tidy. We provide the broom, which serves as a traditional means of exercise and rhythmic manual labor. And it’s easier on the ears than a leaf-blower.
If you have a way with plants and enjoy yard work, talk to us about your creative ideas to change the look and feel of the landscape. We’re also open to discussing the use of containers and pots for both flowers and vegetables.
Please contact us if you wish to help maintain the school grounds.
Events
The school puts on a benefit auction once a year, in the spring. We also conduct a Braille Camp each summer. Other events are in the planning stages. There is always a need for volunteers when we have a fundraising or educational event to produce. If you’d like to know which events are coming up so you can spend some time volunteering with us, contact us and request to be on our mailing list.
Annual Auction
Our benefit auction in the spring is made possible by the generous donations received from local businesses and individuals. All kinds of goods and services find their way to the auction and are available for bidding. If you or someone you know would like to donate items to the auction, contact us. We love variety, because that draws people in.
We also gratefully accept cash donations put towards venue rental, refreshments, and other aspects of event production.
Proceeds from the auction directly benefit students at the Louis Braille School. We do not deny admission to a student because of a family’s inability to pay tuition. The auction provides critical funds to help fill the gap.
Summer Braille Camp
The summer Braille Camp provides students with an enjoyable mix of educational and recreational activities. Kids get to hear professional blues musicians, and trainers from Guide Dogs for the Blind bring puppies in training to the camp so the children can brush and walk them, as well as learn some simple commands.
The camp lasts for two weeks and charges tuition of $250 per student. With your help, we make financial assistance available to those families who need it. If you would like to help send a child to summer Braille Camp, please donate online or mail a check to:
